10 Myths about Blogging

BACK TO ARTICLES

Blogging has been around for a long time. Sometimes it seems like just about everyone has one and I occasionally forget that we used to get recipes from cookbooks instead of blogs, but what about your business? Maybe you think you don’t need one. Wrong. There are a ton of misconceptions about blogging out there, and we’re here to smash them into the dust for you.

10 Myths About Blogging

1. Blogging isn’t important to your business.

Um, no. A blog is arguably one of the most important online presences your company can have. Other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter focus on short and to-the-point messages that have their definite perks, but a blog is your chance to really show the voice of your company.

2. You have to blog every day.

If you have the time and an overabundance of interesting content to share with your readers, I salute you. That’s normally not the case, and if you saturate your blog with filler you’re likely to lose followers. The goal should be consistent content. Studies have shown that companies that blog at least twice a week get 5x more traffic to their website than companies who don’t blog at all.

3. You should just give up if you don't see immediate results.

Don’t abandon your blog! Blogging takes a lot of hard work and dedication and probably won’t see much traffic at first. With consistent content and good blogging practices, however, the readers will start to trickle in and eventually your content will start to show up on search engines.

4. Blogging takes too long.

Would you be willing to write stuff for 2-3 hours a week if it meant generating 70% more leads for your company? Statistics show that companies who blog get 55% more web traffic and 70% more leads than those that don't.

5. Blogging is just a fad.

Darn kids and their decades of blogging trends that have only increased as social media becomes more and more important to online marketing. Don't be mistaken, blogging is not just for the kids.

6. Your customers don’t read blogs.

Ever searched for something online and then read about that something in a blog post? Chances are you probably have. In fact, 65% of daily internet users read blogs. Your customers may not necessarily subscribe to tons of blogs and equate their Wordpress reader tool to their morning cup of coffee, but blogs do get read and there’s no limit to who can find yours.

7. All blog posts should meet a word count total of ____.

This isn’t high school, unless it is, in which case I’m sorry. A lot of best practices lists about blogging suggest a post length of 400-600 words, but non-rules were made to be imaginary-broken. While 400-600 is a great guideline, in the end you should write as little or as much as you need to get your point across. If your blog post gets excessively long, you can always split it into a two part series

8. You can blog it and forget it.

Not true. Inbound marketing is about engaging potential customers. Interaction is important. Imagine ignoring someone who came to your business with a question or a comment - what would they think about your company?

9. If you blog it they will come.

There are a lot of blogs out there. No one’s counted, but take our word for it. We won’t use the needle in a haystack analogy, but try finding a small thing in a large pile of similar small things. You need to make your blog easy to find. Luckily we’ve compiled a blogging checklist to get you started.

10. Blogging is easy.

Blogging takes work. Sure, you could throw a bunch of words together and press publish, but you aren’t likely to see genuine results from that. Take your time and do it right.
