Hackintosh: Why Our Company Decided to Build It’s Own Computers Pt. 1

BACK TO ARTICLES

The idea is to build what is commonly referred to as the Hackintosh (a non-apple computer running OSX as an operating system). It took us a while to adopt this idea. I’ll spare you the technical details and just say that there is a long list of risks that come along with combing a huge bundle of wires and soldering boards to make a working, processing machine. It is a scary prospect but we did the research, weighed our options, and decided that the rewards far outweigh the risks. We love tools at Hüify. If a tool helps us do our job faster, better, and more efficiently…we use it. We also tend to be very picky over which tools we choose to use, hardware and software alike. If a tool doesn’t fit our organization "likea glove" then chances are we aren’t using it.

So naturally when it came time to purchase new computers for our team, we knew we needed to find computers that fit our needs as online marketers. After doing the research, we found buying Mac’s from Apple with the horsepower we need to do our job effectively would cost about  $3000 per machine. Our team is built on Apple OSX and switching operating systems was considered a non-option. So, we needed a solution that was economical and allowed us to use the operating system we were accustomed to.

So we've decided to build our own…

The idea is to build what is commonly referred to as the Hackintosh (a non-apple computer running OSX as an operating system). It took us a while to adopt this idea. I’ll spare you the technical details and just say that there is a long list of risks that come along with combing a huge bundle of wires and soldering boards to make a working, processing machine. It is a scary prospect but we did the research, weighed our options, and decided that the rewards far outweigh the risks.

We spent the last few weeks researching parts, reading forums, and watching videos in order to educate ourselves on the process. We have ordered all the parts and tools we need to make our first build and they are arriving day by day.

Over the next few weeks I will be updating our blog with a series of posts that document our journey of building our own computers (for better or for worse).  Please stay tuned and wish us luck!
