Facebook for Web Developers

Yesterday, Doug Purdy, Director of Platform Product at Facebook, was interviewed as a part of the Facebook Developers Live talk series. In his session, “What Developers Need To Know In 2013,” Purdy covered the Facebook platform as a whole and how it is closely working together to bring us the future of the way we interact with the web. Facebook SDK’s approach (build, distribute, and prompt) is one that can be replicated across all media and platforms.
A great example of this is through Facebook Games. After Facebook Games were built there was a steady adoption rate. Now that they have been distributed and they are in the prompt cycle, the user numbers has dramatically increased. It is calculated that 251 million users have played Facebook Games since they were launched. This user embrace was not unrewarded, developers received a revenue of $2.5 billion from Facebook Games in 2012.

Marketing is emerging from a search/pull model, where individuals are looking up reviews and deciding for themselves what products they are interested in; to a “push” based model where the products find them. Brands need to pay close attention to develop the relationships with their customers, so that the “push” is acceptable and welcomed. Spamming and advertisements that interrupt our daily lives (i.e. pop-ups, advertising redirects, etc) in an undesirable fashion will drive the relationships away. In contrast, brands that learn to harness and learn from their audiences, can use their knowledge to reach out to their consumers with pertinent products.

What are examples of this? Have you seen where companies reached out to their customers in an audience specific way? Answer in the comments!
