3 Takeaways From My First Week At Hüify_Office

Monday morning, before work.

It was the morning of my first day at Hüify, and I was shaking.

I didn't usually get this nervous about stuff. Nerves are good, though, I assured myself. I put the bag of coffee grounds my sister had given me back into the cabinet, and noticed a yellow post-it note.

"Hey Chris - Good luck in Wilmington! This is really strong coffee, so I wouldn't use as much as you usually do!"

That explained the shaking.

Monday Morning, at the office.

The drive took three minutes - a strange feeling looking back at my forty five minute commute at my last job.

I had met the team through the various stages of the interview, and had listened to some of their podcasts, and was excited to work with them in a cohesive business setting.

They had sent their onboarding process docs a week earlier to give me a chance to hit the ground running on my first day. The documents were thorough, and I felt pretty confident walking in the door that I had prepared myself.

I walked into the office, and started my week.

Now that it's Friday, here are three of my key takeaways from my first week here at Hüify.

1. The Culture

The company I worked at before Hüify is an outsourced recruiting solutions firm with 75 employees, give or take. I was curious about how the office cultures would differ.

Throughout the week, I saw and felt the collaboration, trust, and interplay that forms the identity of this office. Ideas are bounced off of each other, help is offered and given where needed, and positive support is appropriately balanced with constructive criticism.

Coming into it, I was nervous about leaving my previous position. I was comfortable, but not happy. Those concerns quickly faded as I paid attention to Hüify's strong dedication to process and intense focus on vision.

2. The Work

The landscape of marketing (and many other facets of business) has shifted dramatically with the progression of the digital revolution.

Customers have the power now; it's as simple as that. With instant access to information on thousands of competitors for products and services, differentiation is the name of the game.

One of the first questions I asked during my interview process at Hüify was, "How does Hüify show its value compared to competitors?"

I would be doing the speaker injustice if I quoted them incorrectly, but they emphasized their commitment to the words "partner" and "authenticity."

Through observation and training my first week, I realized that Hüify does not use those words as buzzwords. We have very authentic relationships with our clients, and the transparency is reciprocated. Hüify is committed to educating their clients as the inbound marketing landscape continues to shift, and execute quality projects with efficiency.

This all sounds salesy as shit, but I'm articulating what I've seen.

3. The Town

My first week at Huify - Downtown Wilmington

Wilmington, North Carolina is not regarded as a hub for business.

That is changing.

It is ranked by Forbes as the 32nd "Best Place for Business and Careers", and 18th for "Cost of Doing Business."

I went to UNC-Wilmington for school, and really only looked at Wilmington through the lens of a college kid trying to find the cheapest spot for a drink. (Wilmington has no shortage of those, either.)

I have started to look at the town with a different perspective.

With cheap real estate, a beautiful community, an established University to supply a pipeline of good job candidates, and a central location on the east coast, Wilmington has the formula for huge population and job growth.

It's important to love the community in which you work, and Wilmington makes that part easy.

Friday, at work.

The week is winding down.

It was a whirlwind of training and meetings and reading and writing and onboarding and lunches and caffeine and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I'm excited about my future here. The team is passionate about their vision and the commitment to the big picture is evident.

It's been a long week, though, and it's time for a beer.

Or three.
